Susan Rice: We Are Here Because Trump Demonized Peaceful Protester Colin Kaepernick

On CNN's "Situation Room" Sunday, former Obama administration National Security Adviser Susan Rice said the unrest during George Floyd's death demonstrations was partially due to President Donald Trump demonizing nonviolent protests, including former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick kneeling during the National Anthem.

Rice said, "It's just essentially an issue that our culture still carries the vestiges and the realities of racial inequality and racism every day, so that's what needs to be tackled. We need leadership, Wolf, who cares about our common humanity, In treating all Americans as if they are equal in number and belong. Not leadership like we have in the White House invoking segregationist language and talking sicking dogs and shooting peaceful protestors.

This is a time when we need empathetic, rational, constructive leadership that seeks to unite us and finally deal seriously with the root causes of this racism and the root causes of our inequality.

When asked about Trump's Antifa tweet, Rice said: "When he goes after journalists,  which you recognize he does so on a day to day but does so during a moment when journalists are out on the streets trying to exercise their rights keeping the American people informed and being attacked themselves by cops. We just had your colleague on the road who was arrested. We’ve seen local reporters being shot in a number of our streets, with rubber bullets and everything else. this is often not a flash for a pacesetter to incite violence against the media or violence against peaceful protesters.

To designate Antifa, a terrorist group, fine, but let’s also specialize in white supremacists who he called within the past very fine people. we have a drag here, Wolf. Peaceful protesters focused on the pain and disparity we’re all wrestling thereupon need to be addressed.”
She added, “We need leadership desperately Wolf, that doesn’t demonize peaceful protest frankly from Colin Kaepernick to those that tried to peacefully protest in recent days. we'd like leadership that listens, that understands that these are very real problems that we've to deal with. Here we are within the middle of an epidemic when over 100,000 Americans have died, more than needed to die had we had competent and effective leadership. And yet we’re not focused thereon, and that we aren't focused on the truth that among those 100,000-plus disproportionately were African-Americans and Latinos, people of color. we've real fundamental issues during this country that's gone time we address through new policies that, you know, allow people to possess decent jobs, with livable wages, real education, real health care, housing that’s, you know, fitted to all folks. There’s just an enormous amount of labor to be done, and it’s a hobby we roll in the hay. the sole way we’ll get there's if we've real change in November.”
